Why?

At Hollywood our intent is to promote a love of reading for children, staff and the wider community. The intent is to have reading at the heart of the curriculum and that children can say with confidence that 

I read because I want to. I read because I know how to and I read because I can.

What?

• A robust phonics scheme, Little Wandle. Please see our Phonics page for further information.

• A book-based planning sequence which covers all Primary English curriculum requirements by teaching through a text, Literacy Leaves.

• From Year Two onwards, we use a strategy comprehension that helps children develop a deeper understanding of comprehension. Focusing on the six key areas: It is used in both Key Stage 1 (KS1) and Key Stage 2 (KS2) with slight adaptations. Pupils are exposed to high quality, diverse texts written by significant authors.

• A cohesive sequence to make learning logical and rooted in strong content.

• Teachers who have strong subject knowledge to foster engagement, coverage and outcomes.

• Reading journals which follow the school Presentation Policy and demonstrate progress of core reading skills.
