Reading
At Hollywood our intent is to promote a love of reading for children, staff and the wider community. The intent is to have reading at the heart of the curriculum and that children can say with confidence that
I read because I want to. I read because I know how to and I read because I can.
A robust phonics scheme, Little Wandle. Please see our Phonics page for further information.
Teaching the skill of reading
Reading Spine
Our reading spine links to Hollywood’s values: Respect, Ownership(independence) Curiosity, Kindness and encompasses diversity and kinship.
The spine has been selected to ensure that throughout their time at Hollywood, children are exposed to books that contain a ‘big’ idea at its heart; reflect a diverse range of voices and characters, reflecting the background of pupils in the school and society more widely; have rich, lyrical language; have the potential to develop pupils’ wider knowledge; deliberately widen horizons by offering culturally rich content ; offer opportunity for pupils to encounter a different genre or format so they have a chance to experience a wide range of literary forms and develop their own opinions and preferences.
In addition to these books, each year group has poetry and non-fiction narrative texts. Staff are encouraged to build on the reading spine with their own recommendations. within their reading sessions.
Reading Sessions
Reading lessons should focus on supporting pupils to construct a mental model of a specific text so that they understand its meaning. Framework page 108
Reading sessions will happen daily for 30 minutes from Spring Term in Year 2 and in all terms in Year 3 to 6.
The cycle of the reading sessions is 10 days. Each cycle will start with a Book Talk session followed by 4 days of smaller group reads where the rest of the class are encouraged to engage with two interest tables, a poetry table or their own book. This will then be followed by another Book Talk session, two sessions of 1-2-1 fluency and then finally two comprehension sessions.
