MFL - Spanish
Our Modern Foreign Language (MFL) curriculum is designed to foster a love of language learning and an appreciation of other cultures. We believe that learning another language helps children develop a natural curiosity about the wider world, deepens pupils’ understanding of their own language, and lays the foundations for future language study. We also believe that we are preparing pupils for international job opportunities for their later life.
Pupils will develop vocabulary, grammar, and language skills through age-appropriate topics, building from simple foundations to more fluent and authentic language use.
The ‘three pillars of language learning’ (phonics, grammar and vocabulary) are built into lessons and delivered across three different teaching types.
Phonics: There are four sequential and progressive phonics lessons incorporated into the long-term planning. These four lessons build up pupils’ phonetic knowledge, moving from the phoneme on its own, to seeing it in high-frequency words and then finally incorporated in context in a longer piece of text.
Vocabulary: Essential vocabulary to be covered by the end of primary phase has been summarised on the ‘Core Vocabulary Mat’ which can be found in the ‘Planning’ section of the Curriculum Guidance. This is the minimum, most useful, age-appropriate, non-negotiable language recommended to be taught at each stage of learning.
The core vocabulary includes: Numbers 1-100 Colours Days of the week Months of the year Personal details Key phrases, verbs and questions.
Grammar: Grammar is weaved into each and every Language Angels unit across all three teaching types. Grammar is addressed both implicitly and explicitly. Implicitly in the early learning units then moving towards a more explicit approach in the intermediate and progressive units
Lessons will provide suitable levels of challenge through the Language Angels Teaching Type categories: Early Language, Intermediate and Progressive.
Lesson structure helps ensure all skills are developed and well balanced to include: listening, speaking, reading, writing and grammar.
Pupils will be learning to discuss personal information (greetings, family), everyday life (clothes, daily routines), the world around them (animals, seasons, planets), descriptive/numerical data (numbers, colours, dates), hobbies (instruments, sports) and they will be making cross-curricular links with History and Geography.
